Dr. Chan Kok Gan and Dr. Ng Ching Ching from the Institute of Biological Sciences will be meeting up with UM Nobel Fellow, Dr. David Baltimore, in Caltech next week. Both of them will brief Dr. Baltimore about the various high impact research (HIR) programmes in UM and to look for joint research collaboration between the two institutions. Dr. Ng will also meet up with Malaysian Postdoc, Dr. Ea Chee Kwee, in Caltech, to discuss their joint project on Epigenetics funded by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Fund. Dr. Ea will be returning soon to join UM and carry on with his research project in joint collaboration with Dr. Baltimore.
Dr. Lawrence Choo from the Dental Faculty will be visiting UM Distinguished Fellow, Dr. Rita Colwell, in the University of Maryland. Lawrence returned to UM a few months ago after completing his PhD in Bioinformatics in Cambridge. He will explore joint research collaboration with Dr. Colwell and her research team in the area of Systems Biology.
A MoU was recently signed between UM and RIKEN, Japan. 2001 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Prof. Ryoji Noyori, signed on behalf of RIKEN. Prof. Noyori also agreed to become a UM Nobel Fellow, and to serve on the UM HIR Advisory Council. Several projects in chemistry and materials science have been identified for joint research collaboration between UM and RIKEN.
Dr. Alfred Tay, a Malaysian working with UM Nobel Fellow, Prof. Barry Marshall in University of Western Australia, visited UM recently. A discussion was held with Prof. Jamuna Vadivelu who heads the joint project between UM and UWA to work on a project to study Helicobacter pylori infection among Malaysian indigenous populations and compare the findings with other indigenous populations in the region, including Australian aborigines.
The National Synchrotron Radiation and Research Center (NSRRC) in Taiwan will be conducting a workshop in UM. The tentative date is 14 to 15 December 2011. There will be a dialogue session between the NSRRC visitors and UM researchers to explore areas of common interests and possibility of joint research. During the workshop, there will be the signing of a tripartite MoU between UM, NSRRC and the National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan.
The Academy of Sciences Malaysia is organizing the ASM Technical Workshop on Bioinformatics: Principles, Methods and Applications from 5 – 9 December 2011 at Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya.
